Radiation Therapy

A Closer Look at Radiation Therapy

Radiation, alone or in conjunction with other treatments, is effective in treating about half of all cancers. While it might sound frightening, radiation can actually be the least risky method of treating certain cancers. Dr. Morrell will be transparent and tell you everything you need to know about the process to help ease your concerns.

The Radiation Therapy that we offer here at CenterPoint Radiation Oncology is essentially a very simple process. When you come in every day, we’re gonna place you on the machine in the exact same position, and we’re gonna take our pictures to make sure that we can see our target and make sure that we’re staying off of the normal tissue.

Radiation Therapy is painless, and you do not feel it. You do not smell it. You do not taste it. We do not stick you with needles and we do not put anything inside your body.

Radiation Therapy is a very quick process. You’re on the table for approximately 10 minutes, but the beam of radiation is only on for about a minute and a half, and we spend the remainder of the time getting you in the exact same position every day and then taking our confirmatory pictures.

Available Therapies

Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)

The TrueBeam linear accelerator uses a device called a dynamic, multi-leaf collimator with 120 movable ‘leaves’ that break the radiation into thousands of tiny ‘beamlets’. These beamlets can be contoured in 3-D to the exact shape of a patient’s tumor by modulating–or controlling–the intensity of the radiation beam.

With this flexibility, IMRT can safely deliver higher, ultra-focused doses of radiation, while minimizing the dose to critical structures nearby.

Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)

Clinicians use IGRT to treat tumors in areas of the body that move, such as the lungs, with the utmost precision and accuracy.

The TrueBeam machine has high-resolution imaging that allows visualization of the tumor before, during, and after treatment.

Clinicians compare these images to reference images taken during a simulation and then can adjust the patient’s position and/or the radiation beams for more precise delivery.

Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS)

SRS is a non-surgical procedure that delivers precisely targeted radiation at a dose high enough to destroy the tumor quickly. Treatment is often completed in a single session, although several sessions may be necessary for larger tumors. SRS is typically used for brain and spinal cord tumors.

Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT)

When SRS is used to treat other areas of the body, it is referred to as Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT).

Volumetric-Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT)/RapidArc

With RapidArc technology, the linear accelerator rotates around the patient, as the radiation beams sweep in continuous uninterrupted arcs, tightly pin-pointed on the cancer. Three-dimensional CT imaging allows us to see the tumor as we are treating it, greatly increasing the precision of the radiation, and allowing more control in delivering a carefully targeted dose. This technology also greatly reduces the length of each individual treatment session.
