Prostate Cancer

Having treated over a thousand prostate cancer patients in over 16 years, Dr. Morrell is the best radiation oncologist in Beverly Hills and has the expertise and in-depth knowledge to guide you to the best possible treatment for your diagnosis.

Moreover, Dr. Morrell has extensive experience in treating men who have been initially diagnosed with prostate cancer as well as those who need radiation therapy after a recurrence after surgery or High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU).

After skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in men. Radiation oncologist Rosalyn Morrell, MD, has extensive experience in successfully treating it at CenterPoint Radiation Oncology in Beverly Hills, California. If you or a loved one has this form of cancer, please call the office or book an appointment online today.

One of the most common cancers that we treat here at CenterPoint Radiation Oncology is prostate cancer, and we’ve been treating it for over 17 years. We use external beam radiation therapy here. There’s another way to treat it, which is called brachytherapy, but we focus on external beam radiation therapy here, and that’s what the majority of men choose.

The benefit of external beam radiation therapy is that it is all done on an outpatient basis.  Also, there’s no surgery involved. You do not have to go to the operating room and get general anesthesia.

YOUR PROSTATE CANCER QUESTIONS ANSWERED

What is Prostate Cancer?

The prostate is a walnut-shaped gland that only men have. It sits below the bladder and produces fluid that nourishes sperm. When cells in the prostate mutate and grow out of control, they become cancerous tumors.

Adenocarcinoma is a type of cancer that develops from the prostate gland cells. Other types, including small cell carcinomas and sarcomas, are rare.

What are the symptoms of prostate cancer?

Most types of prostate cancer develop slowly and don’t cause symptoms in their early stages. Signs and symptoms of advanced prostate cancer include:

  • Difficulty urinating
  • Blood in the urine or semen
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Unintentional weight loss

Many men who have prostate cancer don’t know it, which is why a routine prostate cancer screening is an essential part of preventive care.

What prostate cancer treatments are available?

Prostate cancer treatment is highly successful. At CenterPoint Radiation Oncology, Dr. Morrell works closely with a multidisciplinary team of specialists, including urologists, to ensure the best possible outcome through our personalized treatment plan.

Dr. Morrell considers several factors when recommending the most effective treatment, including the cancer stage, your overall health, and whether cancer has spread.

Dr. Morrell is one of the best at educating patients on their diagnoses.  Every patient leaves her office with the knowledge necessary to make informed decisions regarding their treatment.

How does radiation therapy treat prostate cancer?

Radiation therapy destroys cancer cells with high-power energy beams like X-rays or protons. At CenterPoint Radiation Oncology, Dr. Morrell uses the most advanced imaging technologies, such as MRI and PET scans, to guide the radiation therapy planning process. Also, she may use genomic tests to analyze the cancer cells and determine the type of mutation.

Then, Dr. Morrell creates a personalized radiation therapy plan that treats cancer while minimizing side effects. She uses the highest quality equipment, including the TrueBeam® radiotherapy system to target cancer with pinpoint accuracy. Dr. Morrell may also recommend SpaceOAR™ Hydrogel to reduce urinary, sexual, and bowel side effects.

Common approaches to radiation therapy for prostate cancer include Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), and volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT).
